Descripcion
Subshrubs 0.85 m tall; branches pubescent. Stipular prickles straight, 3–4 × 2–3 mm. Leaves 3- to 5-foliolate; petioles pubescent, armed with slender to stout prickles, 4–6 cm; leaflets elliptic to oblanceolate, 3.5–5 × 1.5–2.3 cm, basally cuneate to attenuate, apically acute, petiolules pubescent, armed, 1–2 mm, margin serrulate-ciliate, surface pubescent on both sides, midrib and secondary veins pubescent, with prickles. Inflorescence of corymbiform racemes, terminal, 20–36 cm; floral bracts subtending lower flowers leaflike, with 3 to 5 leaflets, becoming 1-foliolate, petiolate, petioles puberulent, with a pair of stout prickles at the base, 2–9 mm, blade ovate, 15–25 × 5–15 mm, basally rounded, apically acuminate, margin serrulate-ciliate, with scattered, short, pointed hairs adaxially, glabrous abaxially. Flowers with pedicels 10–16 mm, puberulent; sepals linear-triangular to narrowly lanceolate, 4–6 × 0.5 mm, acute, margin ciliate, pubescent abaxially; petals elliptic, 5–8 × 2–2.5 mm, basally contracted into a claw, claw 1.5–4 mm, apically obtuse, purple, glabrous; nectary conic, inconspicuous fleshy, obsolete in fruit; filaments 7–12 mm, purple; anthers 8–10 mm; ovary fusiform, 5–6 × 1–2 mm, glabrous; style absent; stigma pronouncedly capitate, sessile. Fruits on a gynophore 5–10 mm, fusiform, slightly inflated, 3.7–5 cm × 5–8 mm, glabrous. Seeds suborbicular, 2–2.5 × 1–1.5 mm, seemingly smooth, discreetly longitudinally striate, with a few transverse ridges, cleft covered by a smooth membrane.
Distribucion y Habitat
The species is distributed in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay (Fig. 10C). It occurs in open, sandy, grassy fields and along riversides and borders of woods.

Observaciones: Phenology.- It has been collected with flowers in December and with fruits in February, July, and December.
Discussion.- Tarenaya titubans is easily recognized by the presence of a pair of stout prickles at the base of the floral bracts’ petioles, purple petals, and fusiform, slightly inflated capsules.
